Hawke’s Bay Steak Crowned Supreme Food Champion
Added 7 hrs ago

Matangi’s 30–45 Day Dry Aged Sirloin Steak Cutlet “cuts like butter,” say judges.
A Hawke’s Bay farm has taken top honours at the 2025 Outstanding Food Producers Awards, with its dry-aged sirloin steak cutlet winning the coveted Supreme Champion title.
Matangi has undergone a remarkable transformation from a traditional sheep and beef station into a boutique producer of premium meats. The shift began in 2014, when Robert Haselsteiner purchased Matangi Station and partnered with farm manager Jamie Gaddum and business manager Nicky Gaddum. Their shared vision was realised in 2019 with the first sale of animals born and raised on the property.
In 2024, the team further cemented their reputation by opening the Matangi Boutique Butchery and Showroom in Hastings. The site features premium cuts, a glass-fronted butchery, and a dry-aging cabinet showcasing their craft.
The judges were full of praise for Matangi’s winning steak – the 30–45 Day Dry Aged Sirloin Steak Cutlet – describing it as:
“Cuts like butter. Tender, juicy, melt-in-the-mouth. Unbelievable flavour. Exquisite …”
This is the second consecutive year Matangi has claimed the Emerson’s Paddock Champion title, further proving their mastery in premium meat production.
