New book on NZ soils

The Soils of Aotearoa New Zealand aims to be the authoritative technical text on NZ’s complex soil types. Authored by University of Waikato earth sciences professor David Lowe and colleagues Dr Megan Balks and Dr Allan Hewitt (Landcare).

The authors note that only 0.7% of NZ’s land falls into the two highest-quality land-use categories – LUC 1 and 2. They report on the loss of productive land and in a Farmers Weekly interview Lowe comments: “And we have seen Hawke’s Bay as one area where this has been recognized through the Save Our Plains campaign, helping councils recognize the value of these soils and the need to control expansion.”

The book can be ordered here (and is available as a digital download): https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-030-64763-6
